NTN hold a yearly Awards event where training providers and colleges from any sector can nominate extraordinary learners or employers who deserve recognition for all their achievements.
It is a closely judged event and we are proud to announce that this year we have had two winners and a runner-up from NHTA. Laura Dalby was the winner for the Intermidiate Apprentice of the Year Award, Cast Hairdressing were the winners of the Employer of the Year Award and Ronald Masters Hairdressing were runners up in the Employer of the Year Award. All the awards are closely contested and there are many, many applicants for the catergories leading to just 2 runners up and a winner for each. It is great recognition for Cast, Ronald Masters and Laura of their outstanding achievement, passion and commitment. Well done to you all!

NTN Advanced Apprentice Graduation

On the 27th January 2012 Nottingham Training Network held a Graduation for learners across many sectors who have acheived an NVQ Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship framework.

Wear It Pink for Breast Cancer

Thank you and well done to everyone who took part in the 'Wear It Pink' Campaign for breast cancer from the 10th - 21st October.

11 NHTA Learners and 10 NHTA staff donated money to Breast Cancer over a two week period.

Anna Booth was the lucky learner who won the raffle to win a pair of pink Ice Diamond Straightners. Well Done!

Salon International and Alternative Hair Show Trip

8 Learners and 3 NHTA staff went on the Salon International and Alternative Hair Show trip to London on 16th and 17th October.
On the first evening we arrived at our London hotel and were whisked off to the Royal Albert Hall to watch the Alternative Hair Show. The Alternative Hair Show is where teams compete in Avant Garde hair to win the title of winners. Teams arrive in London from all over the world so the standard was exceptional. We all spent the evening completely amazed and inspired by the standard of work - so much so one of the learners who attended decided to change the look she was planning for the NVQ level 2 hair show coming in the next couple of weeks based on what she saw.
After a good nights sleep, dreaming of the avante garde hair we had seen the previous evening we were transported to Salon International - a hairdressing exhibition. We spent the day at the exhibition looking at all the new trends and products such as feather extensions and also a new diffuser based applicator for a hairdryer that barrel curls hair!

A fantastic trip had by all - I for one will definately be going next year!

NHTA are now auditioning for the NHTA Apprentice Artistic Team.

We are looking for 12 rising stars that are currently training with NHTA for their NVQ Level 2 and NVQ Level 3 qualification. The NHTA Apprentice Artistic Team will get the chance to work with NHTA's Artistic Team to hone their skills, take part in external demonstrations, enter competitions and also get to add the title to their CV.

Members of the NHTA's Apprentice Artistic Team will have to be a confident, dynamic and improving skills with long hair.

VQ Day - NHTA Joins The Cry For Celebration Of Vocational Success

Nottingham Hairdressing Training Agency (NHTA) is supporting the launch of VQ Day and is urging learners past and present to join the celebrations by signing up to the vocational qualifications roll call at www.vqday.org. VQ Day has been created to raise public awareness about the value of vocational qualifications.

VQ Day, due to be held on 23rd July 2008, will be marked by a national event in London, as well as regional events held by colleges and learning providers around the country. NHTA will be taking part in VQ Day…the staff and learners will be raising the profile of vocational qualifications at the Victoria Centre, Nottingham. As most hairdressers will already know, vocational routes are often the best route for young people wanting to enter into a job with training, particularly in industries like hairdressing. NHTA will be giving practical demonstrations on members of the public who would like their hair dressing, curling or straightening. They won’t be charging for these services and demonstrations but will be collecting charitable donations for the children’s charity at the QMC. NHTA will be available to answer questions about vocational qualifications and the ‘work based training route. The Day will also see the publication of a report into the vocational qualifications landscape.

David Moreland, Managing Director of NHTA says, “We see this event as a fantastic opportunity to let everyone know about alternative routes in education and training, particularly with vocational qualifications.

Plans for the Day are being led by education foundation, Edge, and are supported by the wider education community including exam boards, employers’ organisations, the Association of Colleges and the Association of Learning Providers.

A roll call of vocational success has been established at www.vqday.org for past and present vocational learners to log on and add their name to the list. Visitors to the website can also vote for their Celebrity VQ Hero 2008. The shortlist of five celebrities, all of whom have made their name after gaining a vocational qualification will be announced shortly.

Andy Powell, CEO of Edge also hopes the Day will counter the prejudice which sees less than half (44 per cent) of the population agree that vocational qualifications are as important as A-Levels:
“The launch of VQ Day is a huge step forward for the world of vocational learning. However, we need the millions of people who hold VQs, colleges, learning providers and schools to make themselves known by going to the website and seeing how they can get involved.”

“Every year millions of people across the country study for and gain a vocational qualification, leading to further vocational study or university, better jobs and enhanced skills. However, despite these clear benefits, vocational qualifications sadly do not enjoy the prestige of their more academic counterparts. The launch of VQ Day is just one step in starting to put this right.”

Stylist of the Future 2008

NHTA has been delivering work based learning and apprenticeships in hairdressing for 25 years with 16 – 25 year olds. Their training centre, Krown’s Academy, also incorporates a large commercial salon and work closely with many salons in the Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire areas. Learners are closely monitored and encouraged every step of the way of their NVQ/Apprenticeship. The groups are small so they can individually tailor the programme to suit the needs of the individual learner and employer needs.

The Level 3 hair show was a great opportunity for NHTA learners to showcase their creative talents to salon owners, colleagues, friends and family. It allowed them to see the giddy heights they can achieve. One of our previous learners reached these heights by working at London Fashion Week and other top events in the UK.

The pre-show events got under way with Level 3 learners participating in a series of guest stylists demonstrations organised by the Level 3 team. All learners are encouraged to take part in the workshops that follow, gaining valuable advice and guidance from the experts at hand, discussing ideas on emerging cuts, avant-garde hair ups and the latest techniques in fashion colouring.

To enable the advanced apprentices to achieve the highest level of skills they attended Toad Photographic Studio where a guest stylist and make-up artist prepared a total look on a model. Once the look has been created the advanced apprentice then observe the photographic session conducted by Michael the owner of Toad Studios.

The apprentice’s emotions were mixed with excitement and fear but all were inspired and participated in the ‘2008 STYLIST OF THE FUTURE HAIR SHOW’ on 14th April.

Congratulations to all participants, sponsors and contributors who made the day such a success to a full house.

HOT NEWS! NHTA Launches Major Marketing Campaign

NHTA recently launched a major marketing campaign aimed at recruiting young and not so young learners on to their traditional hairdressing and new barbering programmes through the spring and summer.

More than 800 hairdressing and barbering salons in the region including Nottingham and Derby will be receiving mail shots followed by NHTA staff calls offering, not only the NVQ and Apprenticeship programmes at level 2 and level 3 but also a complete training needs analysis for the organisation. Partnerships are in place with other local training providers should training needs fall outside the scope of NHTA.

Most learners particularly in the 16 – 18 age groups will be fully funded but potential learners of any age are eligible under the Train to Gain banner.

Andrea Rowbotham Presentation

In January 2007 Andrea phoned NHTA after receiving a mail shot about Train to Gain at the salon where she was working as a ‘shampoo lady’ and cleaner. Andrea was 38 years old and had left school with no formal qualifications. With a young family Andrea had no time to carry on her work at the salon and take on extra studies to allow her to follow her ambition – to become a qualified hairdresser. Andrea wanted to know more about Train to Gain and how it could work for her.

Armed with appropriate information advice and guidance, Andrea started her training on the programme at the end of February 2007 and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Andrea says “it was a fantastic opportunity and I have been supported by everyone at the salon. Michaela, my tutor was fabulous and extremely supportive. I am thrilled to have achieved this qualification and it has changed my whole life.”

Emma, the salon owner says “This has been a wonderful opportunity, not only for Andrea but the whole salon. Now that Andrea is qualified she can work her own column as well as provide cover for holidays, sickness etc. The training came at the ideal time for me because it allowed me to go onto maternity leave knowing that I could come back part time because Andrea could take on some of my clients.”

Asked how she felt Train to Gain had benefited the business Emma commented, “I feel that Train to Gain is marvelous because Andrea has been able to train in the salon and not attend college on a regular basis. This has meant that she has gained invaluable salon experience whilst training. I would recommend this way of training to anyone.”

Andrea says she would like to enjoy what she has achieved for a little while but would definitely like to go on to achieve an NVQ Level 3 in the future.
